School, mostly. I think....

Well, my worst fears regarding Polish have turned out to be true: I am fighting an uphill battle against the evil sibilant sounds from hell: s, si, sz, z, zi, rz, dz, dzi and dz with a dot over the z. Oh well... I don't know yet if the course itself will take too much of my time, but we shall see.

We went to Montréal last weekend (awesome!) but I of course missed half a work day on Friday AND class on Monday. Contrary to most of the USA, which has the first Monday in September off for Labor Day, Yale has a weird policy of the academic side having a normal day (students and teachers) and the administrative and maintenance staff having the day off. So I missed one class of Polish. Half the class did for various reasons, so I'm not really that far behind, but I feel behind. At least I checked with the teacher, the lovely Krystyna, ahead of time.

I also missed a lecture for Christian Mysticism, but the professor was ok with that. We met up last night to do study questions for the class, and I must say working with him is fabulous. So nice, so smart, so fun. Last night was the first showing of the recommended movies for the class: The Matrix (1999). When I made the room reservation I specifically asked if there was a number I could call if the Technoology failed. I got a phone number, the equipment looked familiar, and so I thought all would be ok. Not so. Apparently they've installed new equipment in many of the rooms in Lindsey-Chittenden Hall, and you now need a password to access the projection system. I, of course, did not have the password. The number room reservations gave me only works until 5 pm. Shit, Fuck, Hell and Damnation.

Of course, not a single students showed up either (who hasn't seen The Matrix, eh?), so Stephen, whose plans had gotten foiled on his end - through no fault of his own - picked me up and we spent the evening watching CSI and doing laundry. I'd left my Polish stuff on campus, so I didn't do my homework. So of course this morning I didn't go to the gym because I wanted to get a handle on Polish, and now I'm découragée over the sibilants. Oh well.

On Friday we are headed up to Manchester, New Hampshire (Live free or die) to visit [info]schreibergasse, [info]gaudynight and Peter, possibly with [info]straussmonster. There may be the opportunity to visit a fair! Exotic! Perhaps also to see Adam, Maggie and Silas. We shall see. I need to check up on if Judit or somebody has air matresses we can borrow.

Is it really already Wednesday?

Do widzenia, everybody!

Walter Ullmann, A Short History of the Papacy in the Middle Ages, (London, 1972)

Apparently the papacy embodied an idea of law emanating from the divine, of which the papacy was an organ and institution. Individual popes were less important than the institution and inherent idea. This process grew fromthe 4th century to the 13th, when focus on the individual, not the institution caused the weakening of the idea, just as it was at its strongest, making the idea a reality. Amazingly self-aware, the early medieval papacy. I sure thought this self awareness came with Gregory VII- Innocent III, not just culminating then... )
